ESOP Association Members Make Fortune’s List of the 100 Best Companies to Work For
Congratulations go out to five members of The ESOP Association that have been named to Fortune’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For:
Burns & McDonnell Engineers-Architects, Kansas City, MO
W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc., Newark, DE
TDIndustries, Inc., Dallas, TX
Publix Super Markets, Inc., Lakeland, FL
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc., Pullman, WA
“This is what ESOP companies do — they create great place to work. Congratulations to our members on the list,” said J. Michael Keeling,
ESOP Association president. “An ESOP Association survey conducted in 2011 showed that 92.2% of survey respondents
reported that creating employee ownership through an ESOP was ‘a good business decision that has helped the company.’
In addition, 72.9% of respondents indicated the ESOP positively affected the overall productivity of the employees. It would be a
shame if the Congressional bipartisan support for our modest national policy encouraging employee ownership was not enhanced as Congress
looks for a ‘common’ ground policy encouraging U.S. based jobs. Five percent of the companies on this list are wholly or partially owned
through the ESOP which is an amazing figure considering that ESOP companies only make up about .0025 percent of all businesses in America.”

Mitt Romney and ESOPs
If elected, Mitt Romney would be the first U.S. president to have direct experience with ESOPs. Bain and Company, which Romney once
headed, set up an ESOP in 1985, paying what in retrospect appeared to be an inflated price for 30% of the company. Romney joined Bain
in 1973 and rose to be vice-president. In 1983, he left Bain & Company to head its new spin off investment firm, Bain Capital, where
Romney focused on leveraged buyouts. In 1990, he rejoined Bain & Company to replace its founder, Bill Bain, after the business consulting
firm had suffered a string of setbacks, dissension, and a scandal over its work with Guinness PLC. Bill Bain had tried to sell the company,
but had no takers. Instead, it was recapitalized, with the ESOP now owning 40% of the stock. Romney successfully restructured the firm,
which went on to become consistently successful. He left in 1992. The ESOP was terminated in 2000 for reasons we could not discover.

Wellness Programs and Employee Ownership
October 14, 2010
The National Center for Employee Ownership has just published a new 28-page issue brief on wellness programs and employee ownership. Wellness programs are a natural fit with employee ownership. The most comprehensive research on wellness programs show they also yield about a 300% return on investment.
The issue brief includes several detailed wellness program case studies from ESOP companies. In addition, there is an overview of the data on wellness programs; an article by Lee Dukes, President of the Principal Financial Wellness Company on what makes wellness programs work; and an article by Amy Gordon and Susan Nash of McDermott, Will & Emery on legal issues for wellness programs.
The issue brief is just $15 to members and $25 to non-members. It is delivered electronically in PDF format. A mailed hard copy is $5 more.
I found working on this project among the most interesting and educational experiences I have had here, and I know that you will benefit greatly by learning more about these programs.
